Tokyo Rose, the indie man’s fall out boy, continues the tradition of putting out very solid albums. The band, who is right on the cusp of breaking out of the indie scene and into all the pop punk kids hearts, is definitely headed for big things and “The Promise in Compromise” is just the start.
The album is classic Tokyo Rose yet updated and refreshed for the masses. The band finally seems ready for the prime time. Don’t get me wrong they have also had a great sound but “The Promise in Compromise” just feels like it has more mass appeal than their past albums.
Saves The Day are masters at jamming into songs and saying exactly what they are trying to. In the same way Tokyo Rose is great at crafting songs which are filled with words to tell the story the song is trying to tell without having to compromise words for the sake of the melody or any reason.
Some of the cleverest lyrics are one like “I’ve heard every word that your mama’s said, she’s right on all accounts but one, I’m right for you as rain” which comes from “Right as Rain” and also “…not sure if I’ve got enough letters to express what I’m trying to say to you, I’m holding out for the triple word score” which comes from “Less Than Four”. Anyone that can make a pick up line from the board game scrabble and turn it into a song is okay in my book.
“Call it what you like…” is the only song which will take you back in time with a 90’s style punk sound during the verses. The song almost sounds like a revived song that never made it onto an older record, still it will have you hooked in the chorus with the face paced lyrics and brief guitar breaks.
The record does not compromise any of the substance just for the sake of a catchy song, yet the album is littered with hooks that you will not be able to escape.
