Full Review: Mobile - Tomorrow Starts Today

3There is something about knowing a person or band is from Canada that just makes you want to tell people “Hey, they’re from Canada”, even if has no relevance. The fact that the band is from Canada really makes no difference to the music, they don’t sound Canadian (i.e. Nickleback/Simple Plan) that’s a joke by the way. The band did win a Juno award in Canada for “New group of the year” which is apparently a big deal so maybe it was worth mentioning after all. Enough about where the band comes from the more important question is this record worth your time, or money?

My first encounter with “Tomorrow Starts Today” was very forgettable, I listened to most songs usually skipping on the next, finally becoming uninterested. I pretty much forgot about the album until I happened to have some down time with the album and put it in on a long drive home and began to see what the band had to offer.

The two stand out tracks which have the potential to catch your attention right off the bat would be the opener “Montreal Calling” which is repetitive but does not seem to get old, the other song being “New York Minute” which is arguably a strong track than the opener. “New York Minute” has such a sing-along-able chorus but it also has verses and a bridge which keep the song going instead of feeling like your just waiting for the chorus. “Dusting Down The Stars”, another potential radio single starts in an acoustic ballad style but by the end has transformed into a passionate rock anthem. The song will also be one which will keep people coming back to it with it’s big but less obvious hooks.

The album does have its flaws such as “How can I be saved” which over does the distorted vocals, and “Tomorrow Starts Today which carries awkward backing vocals. The flaws are not major but are scattered through out. No one who listens to this band will disagree that they are talented, but I think the problem this band runs into is trying not to be forgettable. Like I mentioned before the album took several listens before grabbing a hold of me, hopefully people will give it enough of a chance before setting it aside.

So is the album worth your time and money? Probably, I mean they aren’t Canada’s “New group of the year” for nothing.
