Full Review: Stacy Clark - Apples And Oranges

4.jpgI hear a lot people say that they prefer male vocalist to female ones and to be honest I probably fall in that category too, as I’m sure many of you do. That being said, I absolutely love Stacy Clark’s new record “Apples And Oranges”.

“Matter of Time” is a catchy, light hearted love song that opens up the album talking about how it will just be a matter of time before her love interest with be hers. There are a lot of electronic elements both in the music and also applied to Stacy’s voice which does add a level of texture but over time it can add a level of distraction.

“Hello Again”, “Peppermint Patties”, and “Empty Bottles” are all guaranteed to be fan favorites. “Empty Bottles” is a powerful song which also includes background vocals from Copeland’s Aaron Marsh. “Unusual” and “Strange” are both similar in their approach of hanging the melody on a single word during the chorus. The songs are pulled off beautifully and despite the repetitive nature both stay addictive, never really getting old.

The music on the album is simple, mostly used as a foundation for Stacy’s sustaining voice. The catch is on the choruses where she just goes for in, as in “Hello Again”. There is something personal in the way she sings, being able to bring the listener in and have them connect with the song.

The albums highlights are complimented by the others songs on the album such as “Won’t Let You”, “Recluse” and “Say What You Want” which may not be as strong as some of the other songs but by no means are filler.

Stacy has a voice and CD that sounds like it should be all over mainstream radio, and it probably will, yet she also has this indie street-cred that may be attractive to those of you out there that rebel against the top 40 stuff. In addition to having Aaron from Copeland sing on the record Tim from Sugarcult also makes an appearance as well as Tom from Plain White T’s. If that doesn’t help win the indie kids over maybe the fact that the record is being released independently will.

Name dropping aside, the bottom line is that this is a fantastic record that should be on everyone’s radar this time next year.
