‘Spring’ is the third of 4 season EP’s being released by Switchfoot lead singer Jon Foreman. Like the past albums that have already been released, Spring is able to create a sense of the mentioned season by the use of certain instruments and melodies.
The six song record is different than the two albums that were already released and it is very apparent from the moment the first song begins. “March (a prelude to spring)” is a peppy number that incorporates a backing female vocal as well as some horns. The song is short and to the point yet gives you a good idea of the exceptions that should be had. The presence of a female is not strictly limited to the opening track but is scattered throughout the album.
“Love Isn’t Made” is one of the songs people will remember and mentioned when they talk about ‘Spring’. The songs lyrics and chorus are as strong as anything Foreman has done.”Baptize My Mind” sticks out like a sequence jump suit at a black tie affair. The song is actually very similar to something Sufjan Stevens would create, which should be a plus for most people. The music is so extravagant in a subtle way using strings and some kind of wind instruments to create a breezy, bouncy experience.
The whole album hinges on “Your Love Is Strong”. This is hands down the best out of the 6 and it only takes making it to the first chorus to see why. The song walks along at a healthy pace in the verses as Foreman is having a conversation with God which then jumps into a building chorus where he affirms that “…your love is strong”.
The record concludes very different than it started. Lazy acoustic guitar accompanies lazy vocals. The guitar has a slow walk up which is the primary hook of the song making it slightly harder to get in to than previous songs. Although there are no bad songs, “Revenge” is probably the song that will get played the least. The record is another solid and almost magical release from the singer who seems to be able to do no wrong.
