Full Review: Delirious - Kingdom Of Comfort

3of5.jpgBelieve it or not ‘Kingdom of Comfort’ is the UK band’s 8th studio album. After over a decade of making music the band continues to find that spark, that sets them apart from so many other bands, and puts it into ‘Kingdom of Comfort’.

The album is a mixed bag of incredible anthems and less impactful tracks. The opening song and title track, “Kingdom of Comfort” starts with quick picking on an electric guitar as Martin Smith gets right to the point of the record in the chorus which he sings “save me…from the kingdom of comfort… and my unhealthy lust of material things…”. The song sticks to its low key beginning for most of the song before finally raising the volume and singing out “save me” over and over.

“Eagle Rider” is among the albums most skippable. The song never really sinks its hooks in and thus doesn’t feel like it has much foundation to stand on. “We Give You Praise” on the other hand is a shinning light on the record showing Smith’s time-tested writing skills. Much like past album’s hits “Majesty”, and “Lord You Have My Heart” everything simply falls into place with “We Give You Praise”.

The rock style that is synonymous with Delirious is definitely present on the new record but is more refined. With only 3 really slow songs, the album has a healthy pace but at the same time it is not as hard as some of the stuff the band has done before. In the same way u2 has progressed in their rock ‘n roll, Delirious has followed a similar path musically.

Both “Break The Silence” and “Stare Down The Monster” are ambitious but end up being a bit lackluster. I love the goal, and message that both songs send, especially “Stare Down The Monster” talking about facing certain fears of hard circumstances.

From the moment “All God’s Children” started I knew it would be among my favorite on the album. The programed loop that starts the song continues for the entire duration and absolutely gives the song that extra something to make it memorable. The song also employs the help of a soaring, yet controlled chorus.

When compared to Delirious other work, ‘Kingdom of Comfort’ fairs better than most but it’s still far from the bands best album.
