The Album Project (Checking In)

The site has been going through some changes within the last month or two and we just wanted to check in and see what people thought?
Some of the things we’ve been adding:
* pictures in every post (trying to)
* “songs to start with”
* links to listen to the band
* theme change(s)
What would you like to see [...]

San Diego band Lanterns have a energetic indie rock style which definitely has something to it. The newest EP is rough but still shows the enormous potential.

Song to start with: “Knives Gleam“

Miss California

The song opens with familiar piano and then Andrew’s strained comes over the speakers. “Miss California” is the first (non Youtube) glimpse at the new Jack’s Mannequin record. The song is a b-side from the record, made available instantly for download when you pre-order the new album.
First thoughts? It is exactly what you would expect [...]

Deas Vail are a mix between Copeland, Mae, and Mute Math. Don’t be afraid of the band simply because they have a name that can be kind of scary to say out loud (for fear of mispronouncing it). The band also have a new EP coming out in August and you can bet that when [...]

MixTapeTurtle

Who knows how long this site will be around but Mixturtle allows you to search for artists or songs and instantly listen to pretty much anything. Doing a few quick tests for “Jon Foreman” and “The New Frontiers” among others, I found it works quickly as well as pretty accurately.
If you right click on the [...]

Daily Rec 7/29 [Hardcore Edition]

For those not familiar with Blindside they are a hardcore band from Sweden. The band has been around for a long time but never seemed to break though in a big way. Here’s hoping that they put out a new full length record before the end of the year.

Song to start with: “Pitiful“

1 Liner: Matt Pryor - Confidence Man

Lead singer of The Get Up Kids and The New Amsterdams, Matt Pryor dives into the solo artist world with a beautiful effort. The album is definitely countrified with lots of picking, harmonicas and banjos but no matter your preference to the “country” style, graceful melodies make up for any downfalls.

Sugar High’s influences range from Cheap Trick, Sex Pistols, and Ramones to The Kinks. The band’s influences play into their rock ‘n roll sound which you can hear on the new CD ‘Let The Sunshine Out’.

Full Review: Valencia - We All Need A Reason To Believe

Usually a band or label over compensate for new and younger bands by putting too much spit shine on a major label debut, consequently, alienating some fans. Valencia however, resists the urge to go the “over produced” path and stays true to their style, fans, and focus as much if not more than their [...]

Daily Rec: 7/27 [Day Late Edition]

Sometimes it feels like everyone already knows who Anberlin is but apparently there are still a few who don’t. The band has deep ties into the slightly harder rock genre but time and time again I find that they are able to transcend people’s biases to the harder style with their amazingly catchy melodies. This [...]

1 Liner: Finch - Self Titled EP

Finch, who had de-banded, are now back together and released a new self titled EP. The record is a taste of a new, reinvented style which fans of ‘What It Is To Burn’ can get behind. Opening with “Daylight” the familiar vocal style along with the gritty, in your face rock, are all in tact [...]

First Impressions: Brighten - Early Love EP

We did an interview with Brighten a few months ago, in which they reveled that they would be releasing a new EP at the end of summer. Justin also mentioned that “love” and a positive message would be a big theme of the album which they definitely are.
The record is definitely light and airy musically [...]

I’d like to formally recommend Esterlyn who may have a hard name to pronounce, but still know how to rock. Mostly upbeat and full of passion, the band really can grab your attention.

Full Review: US Royalty - Self Titled EP (Digital Release)

US Royalty doesn’t have much to offer in terms of available music but the new digital EP should help to hold people over until they can get a full length album out.

Interesting Find: Esterlyn

Anybody else surprised this band, Esterlyn, isn’t on Tooth & Nail Records? I am thoroughly impressed after randomly coming across their new record. They definitely have a very friendly rock sound in the same vain as Search The City and Dizmas among others. Any thoughts?

1 Liner: The Midway State - Holes

The Midway State are a weird mix between The Kooks and Ben Folds both musically and vocally. ‘Holes’ is an excellent album, dynamic, rich, and deep and should do well for the Canadian band. “Never Again” is an example of the pop sense the band carries while “Holes” exemplifies the thoughtful, reflective side.

The Midway State [...]

1 Liner US Royalty - Self Titled EP

The EP is only 3 songs long but so full of potential. US Royalty blend faint elements of the indie pop which has been going around with some good old fashion light-hearted rock.

1 Liner: Sunfold - Toy Tugboats

I’ve been listening to this album for a little bit and was really getting into it but missed the chance to recommend it when it came out on July 22nd. The album is more jazzy than you might expect but it is blended perfectly with a bit of folk which creates a different sound than [...]

1 Liner: Valencia - We All Need A Reason To Believe

It seems kind of strange that Valencia ended up on a major label because although these new songs are catchy, they’re in a less obvious way than the band’s previous record was. There is a lot of heart and passion cramed into these 11 songs and this record will turn a few people’s world upside [...]

First Impressions: Valencia

After receiving the Valencia’s new album in the mail I have a few first thoughts about it. The first thing is that this doesn’t sound like a major label release, which is not a bad thing but just interesting.
The thing is that the production is really raw. This is not the reason the album doesn’t [...]

Full Review: The Classic Crime - The Silver Cord

The Classic Crime are a hard/alt rock band which I always forget about, but never seem to have a problem earning back my attention with only a tiny bit of effort. ‘The Silver Cord’ is interesting in that, even now, it doesn’t get me super excited but it still is very solid the entire  [...]

Think of the not-as-quite indie version of Vampire Weekend and you’ve got U.S. Royalty. The stuff on their Myspace is really addictive and worth listening to. Can’t wait for their new album coming out as it should provide some good end of summer music.
