Full Review: Capital Lights - This Is An Outrage

The album is nearly flawless in its aim and execution. The main reason for the band hitting the mark is that they never stray from what they know or do so well. Even a lot of veteran bands struggle with the direction they want to go but Capital Lights have a slick pop rock sound which they don’t veer away from.

Never is there a point on the record which feels awkward or wrong. Every verse, chorus, bridge and transition is crafted exactly as it should be and fits like a seamless jigsaw puzzle. “Out of Control” is a good example of the easy to swallow, sugar coated songs with lyrics and music that blend and only make sense together.

“Let The Little Lady Talk” is one of the several times through out the album which hints of a Green Day influence shine through. It’s hard not to think of Billy Joel when the music and first line, “Well welcome home, midnight to dawn…” begin the bouncy track.

Most of the songs come alive a little bit into the song but “Mile Away” is a guaranteed hit from its very beginning. The song which would do fantastic as a radio single combines a short repetitive chorus and syncopated verse on top of an electronic beat.

The songs do walk a fine line of staying in the same style and sounding too similar, but they are all arguably different enough that you could pick out certain tracks after only once through the entire record.

Swept up in the excitement from the moment I heard the first song, I can not think of an album that’s more fun so far this year. ‘This Is An Outrage’ deserves to be on everyone’s ‘must own’ list.
