Full Review: Boris Smile – Rockets EP

If ever there was a band playing and making music simply for the love and joy of it, my money would be on Boris Smile. The often massive amounts of musicians that contribute to the songs explain the sense of community the songs already convey. On the latest record, the band leaves earth to explore the outer reaches just beyond what the average person knows and sees.
The 6 song album begins with “Adventures With Rockets”, a track that’s made 3 of the band’s 4 releases. Each time the song is reinvented, the newest time closely resembling the songs original form just cleaned up and better recorded. “Apollo” follows the story of an astronaut going to the moon, seeming to be loosely based on someone on the Apollo 13 rocket. The song starts off fairly dramatically with booming low-end while an acoustic guitar picks throughout the entire song. Easily a break out track for the band based simply on the maturity in song writing it demonstrates, however, it left me slightly disappointed with the musical build that never reaches a satisfying climax in the same way “Aurora” does.
When “Aurora” gets three-fourths of the way through the song and breaks into hand claps and a burst of melody you can’t help but want to sing along. Along with past songs like “Home” and “Program Me To Love”, “Aurora” is one of the strongest efforts for the band and definitely makes the ‘Rockets’ EP a sparkling gem.
Before it was cool for bands to be so lo-fi, Boris Smile was setting up in singer Wesley Chung’s living room playing songs about video games, Junior Highschool, and anything else that came to mind. Fast forward a few years and the growth is evident, yet there isn’t any loss of creativity.
