Whether you’re feeling stressed or just need something to wake you up, sometimes there’s nothing better then having a shower.
Studies have already shown that showering in the morning can boost your energy and make you feel more awake, with one study even claiming that weeing in the shower can help save the environment.
But now, research is supporting the idea that having a shower before bed can also help you fall asleep – but it’s all to do with timing.
So if you have trouble dropping off at night and find yourself tossing and turning, it could be worth turning on the hose.
The study found that those who bathed before bed found it easier to drop off, but it’s all about timing.
Further studies by Dr. Dianna Augelli of the Center for Sleep Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center support the theory too.
Speaking to TIME Health, Dr Augelli said: “You don’t want to heat yourself up right before, cooling down is a signal that tells us we’re supposed to go to sleep.”
So the best time to jump in the shower is about ninety minutes before you want to sleep.
This means that your body can regulate its circadian rhythms – the signals that let your body know when its ready to sleep.
After your hot shower, your body will have enough time to cool down and your system will be ready for a restful sleep.
So the key to sleeping easier and better this week is all in the shower.
