Switchfoot long ago hit that level, in which they reached a certain caliber of music, and have been free to move in a variety of musical directions without fear of sacrificing the quality. The songs on ‘Hello Hurricane’ rip through open fields with heavy instrumentation and a sophisticated chaos with the purpose of spreading understanding and expanding on optimistic ideals.

1 Liner: Switchfoot – Hello Hurricane

Lyrically deep and hard hitting in all the ways you would want, but still the record fails to hail as the band’s best. Songs like “The Sound”, “Bullet Soul”, “Mess Of Me” and even “Needle & Haystack Life” pit this album as contender against ‘Oh! Gravity’ for the edgiest work Switchfoot has put out, neither outdoing the other in the end though. Not without heart and style, even though I wouldn’t say ‘Hello Hurricane’ is Switchfoot’s best, it’s leaps and bounds better than work from similar artists.

Switchfoot Video “Mess Of Me” [Official/Unofficial]

While the song has grown on me, I’m still not sure about it. I REALLY want to hear the whole album as to get a sense of the context (and because I want to hear the album).

1 Liner: Ruth – The Covers EP

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Spanning across multiple generations, hopefully finding something for everyone, the 5 track album of cover songs is exactly what you’d expect from Ruth. The band is so good at keeping things simple, in their mellow rock way, that these all sound like songs they could have written. The only complaint is that 5 songs is not enough from Ruth.

Daily Rec: 7/28 [Called It Edition]

Well look at this news. Abandon Kansas, the band we boasted about a month ago, has now signed to Gotee Records. I suggested that Tooth & Nail would have been a good fit, but Gotee works well too. Couldn’t be happier for this band because they really have a lot going for them. They have a sound like that of Switchfoot and The Almost, one that is flexible and evolving.

I like to re-post recs of bands that deserve the attention because I’m sure a lot of people either miss it the first time around or just didn’t check them out for whatever reason. Switchfoot fans should absolutely fall in love with This Holiday Life, another San Diego band who follow the same basic laid back rock principles.

I feel a bit ashamed that I missed This Holiday Life’s new album that apparently came out in 2007. There’s never the time like the present to catch up on good music though. I highly urge you to check out the local San Diego band who happens to have similar sound other socal residents, Switchfoot.

The band’s last album ‘Friction’ was amazing and I can only assume the same about the newest one. If you like what you hear don’t hesitate to buy it from amazon for $7.99.
